Building on New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative, the Public Service Commission has approved demonstration projects by New York’s six investor-owned utilities that would test the waters for a more consumer-driven power market. Under New York’s ambitious REV plan, the utilities will transform into hybrid roles as distribution grid operators that use their networks to deliver power from customers’ solar units, storage batteries and microgrids.
This webinar will highlight two winning programs from CESA’s 2016 State Leadership in Clean Energy Awards: The California Energy Commission’s New Solar Homes Partnership, and NYSERDA’s NY-Sun.
California’s New Solar Homes Partnership is helping to make new homes in California environmentally friendly, while reducing energy bills. The program provides financial incentives and other support to builders, developers, and homeowners to encourage the construction of new, energy-efficient solar homes. It has already helped boost the new home solar penetration rate in the state from less than 1 percent to more than 20 percent.

Co-located with SEMICON West, it takes place annually at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, the United States’ pioneering solar market. The event’s exhibition and conference both focus on the areas of photovoltaics, PV production technologies, energy storage and solar thermal technologies. Since being founded, Intersolar has become the most important industry platform for manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers and partners of the global solar industry. A total of 521 exhibitors and about 18,000 trade visitors participated in Intersolar North America in 2015. The conference featured 47 sessions and 25 workshops with more than 220 speakers.
The CompSust-2016 conference focuses on computational methods for balancing environmental, economic, and societal needs for a sustainable future. The main goal of CompSust-2016 is to promote networking, collaborations, and discussion among computational sustainability researchers from academia, NGOs, and government institutions. The conference brings together academics and practitioners. Through talks, panels and discussions, poster sessions, and invited talks, the conference program will investigate the major problem domains that impact global sustainability, those technologies and processes that offer the greatest opportunities to increase sustainability in these domains, and the fundamental computational methods that support these technologies and processes.
CompSust-2016 will include the launch of CompSustNet, a large scale international computational sustainability research network, sponsored by the National Science Foundation through an Expeditions in Computing award. A CompSustNet kickoff meeting will feature talks by members of the leadership team introducing many of the core projects, and is open to the public.

This webinar will describe the discipline of Grid Architecture as it has been defined in the work done for the US Department of Energy over the last two years. The presentation will cover basic definitions and terms and the purpose, scope, and value of Grid Architecture, followed by a discussion of the shift in paradigms necessary to deal with the complexity of grid modernization. An overview of core principles and methods will provide an understanding of how grid architecture work is actually performed and what kinds of work products are created in the process.
The presentation will then illustrate the use of this discipline for practical grid modernization problems, and show some recent results and architectural insights developed during the recent work done for DOE and the utility industry.
